Between Two Cultures: The Alex Campbell Years
by Wayne MacKinnon
The 1960s and 70 were times of tumultuous change in Prince Edward Island.
The last vestiges of the old order were being swept away, and the Island faced an uncertain future.
It became one of the liveliest eras in the history of the province.
At the centre of it all was Alex Campbell, the Island's longest service premier and its most important political figure of the 20th century.
Described as a revolutionary politician, he sought to achieve a balance between two conflicting cultures, and in the process, laid the foundations for the modernization of Prince Edward Island.
Between Two Cultures looks at the major issues that shaped the province and its people.
Wayne MacKinnon is a provincial government communications officer and a sessional lecturer at the University of Prince Edward Island. He is a former assistant to premier Alex Campbell. Among his publications is The Life of the party, a history of the Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island.
